Silic and Ferrin Named UAB Athletes of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Petra Silic of the volleyball team and Massimo Ferrin of men’s soccer have been named the UAB Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
A junior middle blocker from Croatia, Silic tallied 28 kills, 17 blocks, eight digs and three service aces in a 2-2 weekend for the Blazers.
In a sweep over South East Missouri State, Silic had 10 blocks at the net to pace UAB’s defensive efforts. She is leading the team with 29 total blocks and ranks fifth in Conference USA with a 1.12 blocks per set average.
Ferrin led the men’s soccer team to a 2-2 draw this weekend at UNC Greensboro by tallying both goals for the Blazers.
The freshman from Ontario, Canada, notched his first career goal in the 59th minute from 15-yards out to tie the game at 1-1. He then provided another equalizer in the 79th minute which helped UAB earn the draw.
Ferrin is now leading the team in shots on goal (4), points (4) and goals (2).
The volleyball team participates in the Jacksonville State Tournament this weekend where the Blazers play the host Gamecocks, Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State and New Orleans.
Men’s soccer returns home after a two-match road trip to host the Soccer For A Cure Classic which features games against Tulsa and Rhode Island.
