BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Megan Hudgens’ heroics on the soccer field and Christian Coetzee’s perfect weekend on the tennis court have earned them UAB Athletes of the Week.
With just over one minute remaining in double overtime against UTEP on Sunday, Hudgens found the back of the net to give the UAB women’s soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory.
Hudgens collected the ball after UTEP goalie Alyssa Palacios initially saved a UAB shot. Hudgens calmly settled the ball and placed it in the back corner of the net for the game-winner.
UAB improved to 4-5 on the year and 1-1 in C-USA action with the win, and gave UTEP just its second loss of the season.
Participating in his first competition of the season, Coetzee led the men’s tennis team at the Dale Short Shootout hosted by Middle Tennessee.
Coetzee coasted to an overall record of 6-0, including a 3-0 mark in both singles and doubles. All of his singles wins came in straight sets (including one match in which his opponent retired in the second set), while he and his teammate Eric Komati didn’t allow any of their doubles opponents to win more than four games against them.
Hudgens and the women’s soccer team is back in action this weekend with home C-USA matches against FIU on Friday night at 7 p.m. and FAU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The men’s tennis team continues fall competition at the Southern Miss Shootout which is scheduled for Friday, September 30.
