NASHVILLE – After an hour rain delay pushed back the women’s 5K race, the UAB cross country team placed 16th at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt. Rebecca Evans led the Blazers with the second-best time of her career, finishing at 18:07.8.
"Today was a rough day at work," cross country head coach Matt Esche said. "We allowed some outside factors to impact how we ran, which showed in our finish. We nede to focus on the little things and get back to work. This is a lot better team then what we showed today."
Seven Blazers finished under the 20-minute mark as freshmen Jenna Hinds and Chloe Peek shaved 14 seconds off their best times. Hinds and Peek set personal records, finishing at 19:19.1 and 20:06.2, respectively.
Sarah Livett placed second for UAB with a time of 18:32.0. Emily Drouin followed closely behind at 18:36.8. Freshman Victoria Roughsedge also cracked 19 minutes, finishing in 18:52.2.
Fellow rookies Serena Martinez and Marielle Lewis rounded out the group with times of 20:06.2 and 20:15.5.
The Blazers placed 16th overall out of 25 teams with 432 points. Eastern Michigan earned 68 points, leading all teams, followed by Ohio State, No. 26 Vanderbilt while Butler and Missouri rounded out the top five. Karissa Schweizer of Missouri placed first at 16:46.7.
UAB heads to the Kentucky on October 1, to the Greater Louisville Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt. The meet is slated to begin at 11:30 a.m.
