TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In its first 6k meet of the season, the UAB cross country team posted strong performances at the Crimson Classic, hosted by Alabama. The Blazers finished 18th in the field of 26 at the Harry Pritchett Running Park.
“It was a bit of a rough day. Not being able to run Hannah and Victoria due to sickness hurt is in the team standings,” head coach Matt Esche said. “We are a lot better than we showed today, but we are gearing up for a very strong performance at the conference meet.”
The Blazers, ranked No. 12 in the USTFCCCA South Region poll, were led by Sarah Livett for the first time in 2016. The Benllech, Wales, native crossed the line at 21:54.0 while Rebecca Evans followed closely at an even 22 minutes.
“I thought Sarah ran very well,” Esche added. “Jenna gave us a very gutsy performance and Chloe finished extremely well.”
Transfer Emily Drouin placed third in the Blazers’ lineup at 22:47.1. The trio of freshmen – Jenna Hinds, Serena Martinez and Marielle Lewis – followed behind while Chloe Peek rounded out the group at 25:56.3.
Host Alabama edged Kentucky for a first place finish with 76 points while Lipscomb, Georgia and Auburn rounded out the top five. Individually, Kentucky’s Katy Kunc was the top finisher with a time of 20:15.2.
In just over two weeks, UAB heads to Charlotte, N.C., for the Conference USA Championships on October 29, hosted by Charlotte. The Blazers hold one team title from 2006, which is second to just Rice who holds three championship wins.
