BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team begins Conference USA action Sunday at 5 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face Middle Tennessee from Hayes Stadium.
UAB (3-4-0) will be playing its third straight road match after traveling west last weekend to take part in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament. The Blazers faced both Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine as part of the four-team tournament that also included Oregon.
“We expected to have more success during non-conference play, but we feel that segment of our schedule went fairly well against tough competition,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said. “Our road matches showed us what we need to be prepared for when playing away from home. All in all, having tough home and away matches prepared us for what we will face in conference play.”
Sophomore forward Caroline Kehrer finished non-conference play leading UAB with seven points on three goals and one assist. Both Jessica Do and Sarah Morris tallied five points on two goals and one assist.
Junior Rachel Green paces UAB and is tied for fourth in Conference USA with three assists. As a team, the Blazers already have 12 assists and are tied for fifth in the league. Keeper Kelsey Daugherty ranks sixth in Conference USA with 31 saves and registered a season-high eight Sept. 9 at Cal State Fullerton.
Middle Tennessee (2-4-1) suffered its second straight loss Sept. 11 following a 3-0 setback at Tennessee. The Blue Raiders are winless in their last five games and have not won since a 6-2 victory over Jackson State on Aug. 25.
Forward Abbie Brown enters the weekend leading Middle Tennessee with five points on two goals and one assist. Midfielder Salera Jordan is tied with Brown for the team lead with two goals.
“We are undefeated in conference right now and if we go out and execute what we work on in training, our record can be very good at the end of the season,” Warren added. “We know that every conference match will be extremely difficult, but we feel that we’ve prepared for it.”
