BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB and Akron will meet on the gridiron for the first time ever as the two schools have announced a home-and-home series in 2019 and 2020.
The inaugural game of the series is set for Sept. 7, 2019 at Akron. UAB will then host the Zips the following year on Sept. 12, 2020.
“It’s exciting to see our non-conference schedule continue to evolve,” head coach Bill Clark said. “Akron is a quality opponent from the Mid-American Conference and this series should provide two exciting games for our fans.”
UAB has never faced a team from the Mid-American Conference, but now has two MAC schools on its schedule, including a game at Ball State next year on Sept. 9 in Muncie, Ind.
Under the direction of fifth year head coach Terry Bowden, the Zips are currently 1-1 this season. Akron finished 2015 at 8-5 overall and defeated Utah State 23-21 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Bowden has ties to the state of Alabama as the former head coach at Samford (1987-92), Auburn (1993-98) and North Alabama (2009-11).
UAB has now announced 11 dates and eight future opponents as the Blazers continue to build their non-conference schedule. The Blazers make their return to the football field on Sept. 2, 2017 against Alabama A&M at Legion Field.
“We are pleased with how our future schedule is developing,” Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. “Our goal is to achieve a balanced non-conference schedule to complement the competitive Conference USA schedule each season and we believe we are staying true to that model.”
