SAN FRANCISCO -- In its first tournament of the season, the UAB men's golf team placed ninth overall at the San Francisco Olympic Invitational which was played at the famed Olympic Club.
Redshirt freshman Murray Naysmith led the Blazers by tying for eighth overall at two over par. Naismith entered the final round in a tie for 25th and put together a two-under 69 which landed him inside the top-10 in his first career tournament.
As a team, the Blazers entered the day in sixth place and fell three spots by collectively shooting 15-over par on the final day and +29 for the tournament.
"It was great to see Murray place in the top-10 in his first collegiate tournament," head coach Mike Wilson said. "There were some definite bright spots throughout the week, but we didn't finish the final round like we should have. We are a young team and we need to learn how to finish tournaments."
Sophomore Tim Harry was UAB's second finisher and tied for 19th overall by shooting a +7. After a one-over 72 in the opening round, Harry followed that up with consecutive three-over 74's in the second and third rounds for his top-20 finish.
BYU won the team title at seven over par, while St. Mary's (CA) (+15), TCU (+16), Loyola Marymount (+22) Notre Dame and UC Davis (+24) rounded out the top five.
Individually, Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount and Stefano Mazzoli of TCU shared the low score at three under.
The Blazers continue their fall schedule in two weekends when UAB travels West to participate in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, Sept. 23-25, in Phoenix, Ariz.
