Chandler and Laurent Named UAB Athletes of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Rebecca Chandler of the women’s golf team and sophomore Mathieu Laurent of the men’s soccer team have been named the UAB Athletes of the Week.
In UAB’s first golf tournament of the season, Chandler helped guide the Blazers to a third place team finish and individually took second overall at the South Alabama Intercollegiate.
Chandler shot a one-over par for the three round tournament, including a 70 in the second round which tied for the second lowest 18-hole total at the tournament. She recorded 10 birdies throughout the three rounds.
Laurent anchored UAB’s defense in a 1-1 week for the Blazers at BBVA Compass Field. Despite a 1-0 loss to perennial power Tulsa, Laurent played extremely well on the back line and limited numerous scoring opportunities for the Golden Hurricane.
The Blazers then defeated Rhode Island 2-1 on Sunday and were once again led by Laurent. The Ontario native played all 90 minutes in each contest this past weekend and has not missed a minute of action the entire season.
The women’s golf team is off this weekend before heading to the Chris Banister Golf Classic in Jacksonville, Ala., Sept 25-27.
The men’s soccer team (2-2-2) jumps into C-USA action this weekend when the Blazers host Marshall on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
