UAB Takes Second at Jax State Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team split in the final day of the Jax State Invitational defeating New Orleans, 3-0, in the first match and falling to host Jacksonville State, 3-1, in the nightcap.
UAB 3, UNO 0
A back-and-forth third set proved to be key as UAB (6-5) beat New Orleans (3-6) in three straight sets (25-22, 25-10, 26-24), on Saturday morning at Pete Matthews Coliseum. The win moved UAB's winning streak to five matches.
Petra Silic and Haley Jared went on to lead the Blazers offensively with 11 kills and Silic hitting .714. Amber Treace controlled the offense with 37 assists and a 1.000 attack percentage.
Defensively, Emily Martinez recorded 10 digs while Silic had a match-high seven blocks, six of them being solo. The team finished with a total of 12 blocks in the match.
The Blazers saw New Orleans hit .320 in the first set with 12 kills and two team blocks compared to their own 16 kills for a .367 hitting percentage. UAB jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the second set and never looked back, downing the Privateers 25-20. UAB held New Orleans to a match-low .132 mark in the third set but narrowly escaped with a 26-24 win.

After winning the first set (25-16) the Blazers dropped the next three to the Gamecocks (25-19, 25-21, 25-13), snapping their winning streak. Zembyla and Jared led the Blazers with 13 kills each while Treace posted an impressive .600 attack percentage and had 44 assists.
Martinez added to her dig total with 15 in the match. Young totaled five blocks on the night while the team had seven.
UAB controlled the first set with 15 kills and a .414 attack percentage. Five Blazers recorded multi-kills and four of those had a hitting percentage over .300 in the 25-16 victory. Jacksonville State (7-6) controlled the second set and held UAB to a .000 attack percentage on its way to a 25-19 win.
The Gamecocks came out of the locker room aggressive to start the third set. Jacksonville State posted a .323 attack percentage and held UAB to only a .150 mark. The Blazers had 14 kills but couldn't capitalize as Jacksonville State won the third set 25-21. The Gamecocks dominated the fourth set and held UAB to a -.045 attack percentage and only seven kills in its 25-13 win.
The Blazers are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 as they host Troy at Bartow Arena at 7 p.m CT.
