BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Caroline Kehrer scored two goals and added one assist to lead the UAB women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over UNC Asheville Thursday evening from BBVA Compass Field.
Kehrer put UAB ahead 1-0 early in the second half when she beat UNC Asheville keeper Keller Dixon with a shot into the left corner of the net. Rachel Green picked up an assist after dribbling down the right side of the field and finding Kehrer with a pass into the middle of the Bulldog box.
"We worked a lot this week in practice on combination play, especially in the final third," Kehrer said. "It's exciting for me coming off an injury to score two goals and be able to help my team win."
UNC Asheville netted the equalizer just over three minutes later on a header from Courtney Naber following a feed from Caroline Houser.
Blazer freshman Paige Merry struck for her first career goal to put UAB back on top in the 76th minute. Fellow freshman Megan Hudgens fired a shot on goal that hit the left post, but Merry collected the rebound and delivered the game-winning goal into the near corner.
"We played well in the first half despite not finding the net, but we talked about coming out in the second half and finishing our opportunities," UAB head coach Harold Warren said. "There was never any worry from our team once UNC Asheville got the goal to tie the game. We know were going to create opportunities because we are a dangerous team. We scored some beautiful goals tonight."
Kehrer added a second goal after she and Green connected again in the 89th minute to put UAB ahead 3-1, and Kehrer returned the favor 40 seconds later when her pass allowed Green to notch her first goal of the season.
"Caroline is a goal scorer and that's why we brought her here," Warren added. "I am not worried at all about her ability to keep scoring for us moving forward."
Kehrer now leads UAB with seven points on three goals and one assists and joins Sarah Morris as the only two Blazers with multi-goal games this season. That duo has helped UAB score four goals in back-to-back home games and outscore opponents 9-4 at BBVA Compass Field.
Blazer keeper Kelsey Daugherty tallied three saves and picked up her second straight home win.
UAB returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Blazers host McNeese State from BBVA Compass Field.
