Dear Blazer Nation,
We hope all of you have had a great summer and are ready to embark on another exciting year in Blazer Athletics!
Our summer semester recently ended and we had eight student-athletes walk across the stage at graduation this past weekend with degrees from UAB. I have often said that their diploma is the greatest trophy any of our student-athletes will ever hold.
The football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball teams have all reported to campus and started practice, while the women’s cross country team arrives this coming Sunday. Fall classes officially begin on Monday, August 29, and the first day of the semester will be quite a memorable one for Blazer Athletics.
The UAB Football Operations Building and Legacy Pavilion groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on August 29 at the future construction site on 6th Avenue near the current practice fields. This one-of-a-kind, state of the art facility is scheduled to be completed in time for our coaches and team to move into just before the beginning of fall camp in 2017. Later that evening, Blazer fans will get a look at our team in the first UAB Green and Gold Football Game to be held at BBVA Compass Field. For more specifics about both events, visit UABSports.com. We hope you will join us for these historic events.
The first full seasons of men’s and women’s soccer at BBVA Compass Field are about to begin, starting on August 19, when the women take on Austin Peay, and continuing the following day when the men take on ACC power Louisville, with their annual youth clinic taking place prior to the game.
Volleyball will play in a series of season-opening tournaments, including two at Bartow Arena - the Blazer Classic over Labor Day Weekend, and the “Fight Like Hal” Memorial, September 15-16. The Fight Like Hal event remembers former UAB Volleyball Assistant Coach Hal Messersmith and promotes efforts for cancer prevention and research.
UAB men’s and women’s basketball season tickets are on sale now! After back-to-back conference championships and the hire of our new Head Coach Rob Ehsan, the Blazers look to continue their success on the hardwood. The women’s team will have seven new faces wearing Green & Gold, and Coach Norton is excited about the future!
Thank you for all you do to support UAB Athletics. We look forward to seeing you at our events this Fall!
GO BLAZERS!
Warm Regards,
Mark T. Ingram
Director of Athletics
