BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s soccer team puts the finishing touches on its preseason competition Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama from The Cage.
UAB opened the preseason Wednesday with a 1-1 draw in an exhibition game at Belmont. Freshman Megan Hudgens scored late in the first period following a pass from Sarah Morris to pull UAB even after Belmont struck first.
“I thought we played well for the most part and put ourselves in good positions when we had our opportunities,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said.
South Alabama defeated the University of Mobile 5-0 Friday evening in an exhibition matchup from Sage Park. The Jaguars were originally scheduled to face C-USA foe Southern Miss in an exhibition game on Thursday, but inclement weather forced the match to be cancelled.
South Alabama won the Sun Belt title last season after posting an 18-3-2 overall record and a perfect 9-0-0 mark in league play. The Jaguars would go on to reach the second round of the 2015 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. South Alabama enters the 2016 season receiving votes in the NSCAA NCAA Division I Women’s Preseason Poll.
“This game is going to be a challenge because we are playing against a team that goes to the NCAA Tournament every year,” Warren added. “We want to see growth from the last match against Belmont. We’ve worked on some things this week in practice and we expect to see improvement on the field.”
