Dear Blazer Nation,
I have just completed my first year at UAB and let me start by saying THANK YOU to all of our fans and supporters. We could not imagine accomplishing so much for our student-athletes without you. While we are proud of the work that has been done, there is still much to do. We intend to provide a world-class athletic experience for our student-athletes which mirrors that of our campus. You will begin to see the physical evidence of our hard work this upcoming year.
To conclude our spring sports, the softball team made the finals of the C-USA Tournament, men's golf competed at the NCAA National Championship in Eugene, Oregon, and Hannah Coffin won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For golf, this was the third straight year our team has made it to the NCAA Championship, and we were one of only five teams outside of the Autonomous 5 conferences to compete in the event.
Fundraising for the new Football Operations Center continues to make great progress. You will hear more about tremendous gifts to support the project soon. The Birmingham business community and generous philanthropic individuals continue impressing us daily with their belief in what this means for UAB and our great city.
Our student-athletes not only exceled in their respective sports this spring, but collectively they had a 3.12 overall grade point average in the classroom. UAB had 64 percent of its student-athletes maintain a 3.0 GPA or better, while 41 Blazers posted a perfect 4.0. That dedication in the classroom has continued this summer as we currently have 223 student-athletes enrolled in summer courses.
And just today, Conference USA announced that UAB and the city of Birmingham will host the 2017 Men's and Women's Basketball Championships at Bartow Arena and Legacy Arena from March 8-11. It is a credit to our university, department of athletics, coporate partners and the entire city that the league has chosen us to host such a highly visible event for a third straight year.
It is an exciting time to be a Blazer and we thank you for your support of UAB Athletics!
Go Blazers!!
