UAB Student-Athletes Enjoy Stellar Spring Term

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB student-athletes enjoyed another strong semester in the classroom by finishing the spring term with a 3.12 overall grade point average, Blazer Director of Athletics Mark Ingram announced on Friday.
Individually, 207 UAB student-athletes (64 percent) earned a 3.0 or better grade point average and 41 Blazers posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
“I’m proud of the work our student-athletes have done in the classroom during the spring semester,” Associate Athletic Director/Student-Athlete Services Fernandez West said. “It’s a testament to the culture of high expectations that our coaches, administration and faculty have for our students both in the classroom and in competition.”
Overall, 16 UAB athletics programs finished with a 3.0 GPA or better. The women’s tennis team paced the group with a 3.75 grade point average. In addition, seven programs (men’s golf, baseball, rifle, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, track and field and beach volleyball) recorded the highest spring semester GPA in the last three years.
The men’s basketball team achieved a 3.0 GPA for the fifth time in program history, the second time in the last three years.
“UAB student-athletes have consistently shown incredible dedication and commitment to academic success,” Ingram said. “The academic support staff has put a great emphasis on excelling in the classroom. Our student-athletes continue to respond with achievements that everyone at UAB is proud of.”
Earlier this month, UAB featured 43 student-athletes representing 13 programs earn degrees as part of commencement ceremonies in Bartow Arena.
“I want to thank our staff in the Don M. and Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center who have worked tirelessly to help our 2016 graduates realize their dreams of becoming UAB alumni,” West added.
