BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team fell in a midweek contest to crosstown foe Samford, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field.
UAB (19-29) scratched across just three hits on the night, and left ten runners on base.
Samford (27-22) got on the board with an Austin Edens home run in the second inning and never trailed in the game.
Adam Lamar (3-4) got the call to begin the proceedings on the mound for UAB, and pitched three innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out five batters before giving way to the Blazer bullpen.
Four Blazer relievers combined to give up two runs over the final six innings, as Austin Thomas, Dylan Munger, Cory Eller and Stephen Baggett held Samford in check for the majority of the night.
Griffin Gum knocked in the lone run for UAB with a run-scoring single to left field in the fifth to plate Blake Johnson and cut Samford's lead to 2-1.
Frankie Navarrete registered a bloop single that brought Grant Colton in to score in the fifth inning. Colton's homer to right field in the seventh proved to be the final mark on the scoreboard for either side.
Samford starter Connor Radcliff (3-3) notched the win, yielding a single hit in his 2.1 innings of action. Seven Bulldog arms took part in the game, concluding with Wyatt Burns' fourth save of the season, as he went the final 1.2 innings.
UAB batters drew four walks and were plunked four times - Jacob Armstrong was beaned twice - but had a tough time coming up with the big hit.
The Blazers have their final home series of the season over the weekend, as they host FIU at Young Memorial Field. Game times are set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
