BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team clawed within two runs, but the Blazers fell to UTSA, 3-1, on Senior Day at Mary Bowers Field as the Roadrunners clinched the series, 2-1, Sunday.
“Today is about the seniors,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “Reflecting back on what this group means to the success of this program is incredible. Their leadership, community service and competiveness is unmatched. It’s all about them. There is a lot of ball left to be played, and we are going to enjoy every second of having these ladies lead our team. We’re looking for a strong finish.”
UAB’s senior class of Kelly Britt, Ashley Johnson, Sara Beth Williamson and Caitlin Attfield have won 127 games to date. Over their career, the quartet won the 2013 Conference USA Regular Season Title and made two NCAA Regional and one NCAA Super Regional appearances. The group has also set eight UAB career records.
It was the junior class that led UAB at the plate in Sunday’s contest as JoJo Fallen, Mary Warren and Danii Fernandez all knocked multiple hits against the Roadrunners.
The Blazers (23-28, 13-8) totaled eight hits as a team compared to UTSA’s six, but UAB left 10 base runners stranded over the contest.
The Roadrunners (20-29, 11-10) scored three, two-out RBIs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run home run to right field from Bailee Baldwin, to jump on the board early.
After a lengthy lightning delay in the fifth inning, the Blazers stormed back with infield singles from Fernandez and Attfield. UTSA recorded back-to-back outs, but Warren loaded the bases with a hit by pitch.
Williamson plated UAB’s lone run of the contest as the senior drew a bases-loaded walk. Lizzie Fox retired the side to leave the bases loaded en route to her 10th victory of the season.
Junior Cara Goodwin earned the loss as she fell to 13-9 on the season. The Cullman, Alabama, native allowed three runs off six hits and two walks as she struck out four in the contest.
UAB closes its nonconference schedule on Tuesday when the Blazers travel to Lipscomb in a rescheduled midweek game. First pitch at Draper Diamond is slated for 6:30 p.m. CT.
