OXFORD, Miss. – Powered by three triples at the plate, (RV) Ole Miss topped UAB, 5-0, Wednesday night at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
“We leave here a little better,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “We had good at-bats, putting the bat on the ball and making Madi Osias work. One of the highlights was Madison Hir coming into the game. She was confident and threw a great game. Ashley Johnson was excellent behind the plate against a team that is known for stealing bases, throwing out two. We’re just ready to settle down, play Conference USA ball and finish the season strong.”
After a Blazer error allowed Ole Miss (35-15) to get the leadoff runner on board, Hailey Lunderman tripled to right center field to plate the Rebels’ first run of the game. A wild pitch from freshman Tori Perkins allowed Lunderman to score, putting Ole Miss up 2-0 after one.
After leading off the bottom of the second with triple, the Rebels scored their third run of the game on a squeeze bunt from Gayce Majam.
The Rebels knocked their third triple of the contest after leading off the bottom of the third with a bunt single to score one. A second wild pitch from Perkins cleared the bases, extending Ole Miss’s lead to 5-0.
UAB (22-26) turned two double plays and senior Ashley Johnson threw out would-be base stealers in an impressive defensive performance by the Blazers.
Junior Madison Hir shut down the Ole Miss offense over 3.2 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters; but Rebels’ pitcher Madi Osias held UAB to just two hits to earn the complete-game shutout.
UAB returns to Mary Bowers Field for its final home conference series as the Blazers host UTSA over the weekend. The three-game series begins with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
