BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – After claiming the first two games of the series over the No. 18 Golden Eagles, the Blazers were outscored 11-0 Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
The run-rule shortened game saw Southern Miss put up a fury of runs on nine hits through seven innings. Chase Scott lifted a three-run homer to left in the first inning, and Michael Gilbert highlighted USM’s dominant performance with a third-inning grand slam.
Southern Miss starter Kirk McCarty (3-0) threw all seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven, while UAB threw five arms – all going less than three innings each. Blazers’ starter Adam Lamar (3-3) received the loss after 1.1 innings of work. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless in just two innings.
UAB’s three hits were scattered among Griffin Gum, Carter Pharis and Adam Smith. Gum and Pharis each doubled, while Smith singled in the second inning.
The Blazers return to action next weekend, hosting Middle Tennessee at Young Memorial Field April 22-24. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s game begins at 2 p.m., and Sunday’s 1 p.m. start wraps up the series.
