BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Amanda Winters’ first-inning grand slam proved enough as Troy topped UAB softball, 4-2, Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
“For six and a half innings, we fought and played excellent ball,” head coach Marla Townsend said. “We can’t spot a team a couple of runs in the first inning by giving them freebies. On the other hand, I am proud of the way we finished the game. We put the ball in play solidly. Yes, we gave away some at-bats; but all in all, we put the ball in play off two talented pitchers and had opportunities.”
Troy (16-5) loaded the bases with a bunt single, walk and hit by pitch to lead off the first inning. Winters followed with a grand slam to put the Trojans up 4-0.
After back-to-back singles from seniors Caitlin Attfield and Kelly Britt put runners on the corners for UAB, junior JoJo Fallen knocked a sacrifice fly to drive home Attfield.
Attfield led off the bottom of the third with her first triple of the season and scored on a wild pitch from Troy’s Claire Graves.
Troy and UAB (7-16) traded four scoreless innings to allow the Trojans to claim victory.
Attfield led the Blazers after going 2-for-4 and accounting for both UAB runs.
Cara Goodwin (5-3) tossed the complete game, allowing four runs off six hits. The junior issued one walk and struck out seven batters.
UAB enjoys the weekend off and returns to action Wednesday, March 16, when UAB travels to Jacksonville State for a 5 p.m. CT game.
