BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB women’s basketball returns to Birmingham for its final weekend home stand, beginning with FIU on Thursday night at Bartow Arena. Tipoff for the Blazers and Panthers is slated for 7 p.m.
UAB (13-14, 6-10) looks to halt a three-game skid as FIU comes to town. The Blazers have led for just under half of the minutes in the previous three contests, thanks to strong first-half performances, but have been unable to pull out the final victory.
Last time out at home, UAB forced overtime against the second-ranked Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, but was outscored 11-6 in the five minutes of bonus basketball.
In the game, senior forward Brittany Winborne reeled in the second-most rebounds in a single game in UAB history, 23, as she notched her 16th career double-double. On the season, Winborne has earned 17 double-doubles, the most in the league. The Baltimore, Maryland, native also leads the C-USA in rebounds per contest (10.8), field goal percentage (.563) and offensive rebounds per showing (4.5). Winborne is just three rebounds shy of cracking UAB’s top 10 in individual season records, while her 10.8 boards per night ranks 10th in school history.
Those numbers are at the top of the nation, too. She ranks 14th in the country in rebounds per game, while ranking 19th in double-doubles and eighth in offensive boards per night.
Meanwhile, Deanna Kuzmanic is making her ranks throughout freshmen in the country. Kuzmanic ranks third among all NCAA freshmen and 28th among all NCAA Division I athletes, averaging 2.7 triples an outing. Her 2.7 treys per game are the most by a freshman in the C-USA and the third-most overall in the league. The Wheeling, Illinois, native ranks sixth in UAB single-season history with 72 made 3-pointers this season.
In all-time records, Chelsee Black needs just 2 points to become UAB’s 17th all-time leading scorer. She has tallied double figures 66 times in her career.
Against FIU, both Kuzmanic and Black have tallied double-figure points against the Panthers. Kuzmanic, in her one showing, paced UAB with 14 points, while Black in her three games against FIU has totaled 11.3 points per contest.
Thursday marks the ninth meeting between UAB and FIU in program history. UAB owns a 5-3 lead, including a 2-1 advantage in games played at Bartow Arena. The Panthers have won one game against the Blazers in Bartow Arena, on Jan. 25, 2014.
UAB and FIU met earlier this season. The Panthers escaped with a 72-61 win in Miami.
