UAB Softball Drops Midweek Contest at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- Samford's freshman catcher Hannah Trombley picked up six RBIs to lead the Bulldogs (8-6) to a 6-1 victory over UAB softball (5-12) at the Samford Softball Field on Tuesday evening.
Senior Caitlin Attfield led the charge at the plate with a 3-for-4 night, scoring the Blazers' lone run. Senior Sara Beth Williamson picked up her ninth RBI of the season after a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
Freshman Analyse Petree closed the night 1-for-2, knocking her first double of her collegiate career.
Junior Cara Goodwin earned her first loss of the season moving to 3-1. The Cullman, Alabama, native pitched 3.1 innings and allowed four hits, four runs and two walks while striking out three batters.
Sophomore Megan Smith pitched 1.2 innings of relief and gave up two unearned runs off four hits and struck out six Bulldogs. Freshman Tori Perkins pitched one inning of one-hit relief.
After retiring the first four batters, Goodwin issued a hit by pitch to give Samford its first base runner of the game. The Bulldogs scored two unearned runs off a fielding error on Trombley's single to right field, putting Samford on top 2-0 after two innings.
UAB's senior class answered in the top of the third. Attfield singled to lead off the inning. Senior Kelly Britt reached on a fielder's choice, while Attfield advanced to third on a Samford error.
Williamson knocked a two-out, RBI-single through the right side to score Attfield and cut the Samford lead to 2-1.
Trombley added to the Samford lead, 4-1, with a two-RBI home run to left center in the bottom of the fourth. The freshman catcher drove home two more RBIs off a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the Samford lead to a decisive 6-1.
The Blazers compete in their final tournament of the regular season this weekend at the Tennessee Invitational. UAB opens the tournament against St. John's on Friday at 9 a.m. CT before taking on Green Bay at 2 p.m. CT.
