BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team scored a 7-0 shutout of Troy on Wednesday night at Regions Field to take a 1-1 season split with the Trojans. In addition to eight hits, the Blazers' five pitchers combined to allow just two hits.
"We had a lot of quality at-bats tonight," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We had 26 quality at-bats tonight and only three the night before, and it was a well-pitched game. Our guys didn't allow any hard-hit balls."
Adam Lamar picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0. The left-hander threw five innings and gave up just two hits. Relievers Matthew Calvert, Dylan Munger, Garrett Whitlock and Thomas Lowery tossed the final four innings to no-hit the Trojans the rest of the night.
The UAB offense struck in the second inning with four runs. Riley McCown got the scoring started with an RBI single, and Blake Johnson followed up with a two-RBI double to left. Brewer Hicklen capped off the frame with a sacrifice fly.
The Blazers tacked on a fifth run in the third on a Troy error, and two more crossed in the fourth to give UAB its seven-run total. Seniors Esteban Tresgallo and Griffin Gum recorded back-to-back RBI doubles.
Tresgallo and freshman Carter Pharis ended the evening with two hits each, while Pharis led the Blazers with two runs scored. Johnson totaled a team-best two RBIs against the Trojans.
"We have another very good team coming in Friday we have to begin preparing for," Shoop said. "We have three games against Kennesaw State this weekend. They are traditionally a good club, and a team that advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals just two years ago."
Regions Field plays host to the Blazers and Kennesaw State for a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's matchups are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
