BOCA RATON, Fla. – Brittany Winborne’s stellar performances in the past four games have not been enough as the UAB women’s basketball team has dropped four-straight close contests. The Blazers head to Florida Atlantic on Saturday looking to break the streak. Tip with the Owls is slated to start at 4 p.m. CT at The Burrow.
UAB (10-11, 3-7) erased an 11-point deficit last time out on the road at FIU, but it was not enough as it lost to the Panthers, 72-61, Thursday night.
Senior forward Brittany Winborne earned her fourth-straight double-double, the 12th of her career, as she cleaned up the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds, adding 11 points. Winborne leads Conference USA in field goal percentage as she is shooting 56.5 percent (83-of-147) from the floor. The Baltimore, Md., native ranks second in the league with 10.2 rebounds per night, which ranks 25th in the nation.
Freshmen guard Deanna Kuzmanic shot 3-of-6 from downtown at FIU. The Wheeling, Ill., native is averaging 2.7 treys an outing, the fourth-most among all freshmen in the NCAA. Kuzmanic paces the Blazers with 13.3 points per night.
As a unit, UAB is holding its opponents to a league-low 57.0 points per contest, and is still dominating the glass, with a conference-high +5.8 rebound margin.
Florida Atlantic (11-10, 3-7) is also looking to snap a three game losing streak. The Owls have dropped seven of their last eight contests.
Florida Atlantic is led by Ali Gorrell, C-USA’s seventh-best scorer, who averages 15.7 points a night. On the glass, she is reeling in 7.1 boards per game, a team-high and the 12th best in league play.
The Blazers offense has a chance to put up big numbers as the Owls are giving up a league-high 75.1 points a night. However, the UAB defense will have to defend the nation’s fifth-best 3-point shooting team, as the Owls drop 10.0 triples per game.
UAB and FIU are meeting for the sixth time in program history. The Blazers own a 4-1 advantage in series history, while the Owls and Blazers are knotted 1-1 in games played in Boca Raton. Last time out, the Blazers took home a 59-56 victory in Bartow Arena. Against FIU in 2014-15, Chelsee Black dropped 13.5 points per game in the two outings. Kayla Anderson chipped in 8.5 per contest and averaged a team-best 5.0 rebounds a night.
Next up, the Blazers return to the friendly confines of Bartow Arena for a homestand against Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech.
