UAB Cannot Complete Comeback, Falls at FIU

MIAMI, Fla. – The UAB women’s basketball team erased an 11-point deficit, but it was not enough as it fell at FIU, 72-61, Thursday night. Senior forward Brittany Winborne earned her fourth-straight double-double, the 12th of her career, as she cleaned up the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds, adding 11 points.
Deanna Kuzmanic led a trio of Blazers in double figures as she paced UAB with 14 points. The Wheeling, Ill., native, who ranks fourth amongst all freshmen in the NCAA in treys per game, shot 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Chelsee Black, UAB’s 20th all-time leading scorer, chipped in 11 points.
UAB (10-11, 3-7) trailed by 11 with 8:23 to play in the second quarter at 19-8, but worked its way out of the hole as it went on a 17-6 run to tie the game at 25-all with 1:37 to go in the half. The Blazers and Panthers traded baskets before FIU took the final lead heading into the break on a buzzer-beating layup to lead 29-27.
To open the third, T’erra Lewis secured the first points on a layup, however FIU countered with six-straight points to extend its lead to 35-29 with 7:12 to go in the third. The Blazers continued to show their resilience as they turned turnovers from their press into buckets on a 12-0 run to claim a 41-35 lead with 5:16 on the clock in the third.
The Panthers ended the half on a strong note on a small run of their own to hold a slight 48-46 advantage.
To open the final quarter, FIU’s Destini Feagin went on a 7-2 run of her own as the Panthers increased their lead at 55-47 with 7:16 to play.
The Blazers were unable to come within six points in the final minutes, as it fell on the road, 72-61.
FIU outscored UAB 31-11 in points off turnovers, as the Blazers committed 16 turnovers. UAB’s bench was solid as it outscored FIU’s reserves, 20-6. The Blazers shot 40.4 percent from the floor (23-of-57).
FIU (3-18, 1-9) was led by Taylor Shade who poured in a game-best 26 points, shooting 9-of-13 from the floor. Destini Feagin posted a career-best 19 points and Kristian Hudson added 10 for the Panthers. On the glass, Feagin reeled in seven.
UAB continues its Florida swing as it heads to Florida Atlantic on Saturday for a 4 p.m. CT clash.
