Trio of Blazers Push UAB past Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A complete solid effort by the UAB women’s basketball team pushed the Blazers past Florida Atlantic 67-62 at FAU Arena. Brittany Winborne, Deanna Kuzmanic and Chelsee Black led the attack as the trio scored in double figures to complete the comeback.
Winborne earned her fifth-straight double-double as she cleaned up the glass with 10 rebounds, while pitching in 13 points. Kuzmanic, who ranks fourth in the nation in triples per contest sunk three from long range on her way to pacing the Blazers attack with 15 points.
Black added 14 points, including the final layup which put the game away for UAB. Kayla Anderson narrowly missed a double-double as she chipped in eight points and reeled in nine boards.
UAB (11-11, 4-7) snapped a four-game losing streak as it defeated FAU. The Owls quickly jumped ahead in the first quarter as it was on fire, sinking 67 percent (6-of-9) of their 3-pointers to take a 20-13 lead over the Blazers. UAB countered the FAU attack as it went on a 14-2 run spanning over the final minutes of the first quarter into the second to claim a 27-22 lead with 6:44 to play in half.
The Owls responded with six-straight points to take back the lead, 34-33, with just over a minute before the break.
However, Bianca Dufelmeier would not back down as she drove to the bucket to give UAB a 35-34 lead at the midway point.
The Blazers came out of the half on fire as it jumped out to a 13-point lead at 50-37, thanks to a 13-3 run. FAU refused to go quietly as it went on its own 14-4 run, which started in the third and went into the fourth, to cut UAB’s lead to three with 6:38 to go in the contest.
UAB and Florida Atlantic went neck-and-neck in the final minutes, but the Blazers were able to hold the Owls at bay as they took home a 67-62 win.
Florida Atlantic (11-11, 3-8) was led by Morgan Robinson who led all scorers with 18, as she shot 6-of-9 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from long range. UAB was able to keep Ali Gorrell, the sqaud’s leading scorer, to 12 points as she shot 5-of-16 in the game.
In the game, the Blazers shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor, thanks to a 53.3 percent (8-of-15) showing in the second period. UAB dominated the inside game as it outscored FAU 32-20 inside.
UAB returns to the hardwood on Thursday as it hosts Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
