Golf Places 12th at SunTrust Gator Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The UAB men's golf team began its spring schedule with a 12th-place finish at the SunTrust Gator Invitational today. The squad shot 289 in the third round to finish for a 54-hole total of 863.
Senior Martin Rohwer led Blazer golfers at even on par to place tied at 19. After shooting 72 in the first round and 71 in the second, Rohwer bounced back with a 67 -- just four stokes off the round's leader.
"Great tournament by Martin," head coach Alan Murray said. "He shot an excellent round despite not having his best stuff today. He showed his experience and ability to dig deep for a score."
Freshman John Hayden placed among the top 40 at +7, shooting a 71 in the final round. Will Cannon, Taylor Eyster and Tim Harry rounded out the tournament at +8, +12 and +14, respectively.
"John played well and was unlucky to finish with a 71, but did well for a freshman on a tough course," Murray said. "Overall, I felt like we struggled. It was a disappointing week, and we are a better team than we showed. We have a lot of improving to do, as the team faces stiff competition the rest of the way this semester."
Golf is back in action Feb. 26-28 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
