BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama pitching staff combined for a no-hit shut out as the UAB softball team fell to the No. 5 Crimson Tide 7-0 in the Blazers’ home opener Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
“We put the bat on the ball solidly the first couple of innings, but nothing turned into a hit,” said head coach Marla Townsend. “Alabama had outstanding defense. The shots that we had didn’t fall. Hats off to their staff for pitching an outstanding game.”
Madi Moore, Sydney Littlejon and Alexis Osorio combined for the no hitter, but only struck out two Blazers. Junior JoJo Fallen drew two walks and was the only Blazer to reach base.
After a scoreless first innings that saw UAB’s senior shortstop Caitlin Attfield turn a nifty double play, Alabama (5-1) knocked back-to-back home runs in the second inning to take the lead. The Tide went on to score five additional runs on five hits over the final innings.
“We are going to get back to work tomorrow and continue the process,” Townsend added. “The process is working. These balls are going to fall. We are going to keep hitting it hard and utilize our pitchers that work extremely hard. I feel like great things are going to happen.”
Junior Madison Hir (1-2) pitched 3.1 innings in her third start of the season allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out one. Sophomore Megan Smith, junior Cara Goodwin and freshman Tori Perkins made relief appearances for the Blazers (1-5).
Perkins continued her streak of shutout innings allowing just one hit and one walk over 1.1 innings.
UAB returns to tournament action this weekend at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla. The Blazers open the tournament Friday against College of Charleston at 10 a.m. CT. UAB continues play against No. 1 Florida on ESPN3 at 2:30 p.m. CT.
