UAB Earns Third-Straight Win, Defeats LA Tech

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A quartet of Blazers led the UAB women’s basketball team past Louisiana Tech, 64-49, on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena. The Blazers used a dominant first quarter and never looked back as they earned a complete 40-minute victory for their third consecutive win.
Senior Brittany Winborne notched her 15th career double-double, her 12th of the season, in the win. The Baltimore, Md., native tallied 10 points and reeled in a game-best 10 boards. Senior guard Chelsee Black led all scorers with 18 points as she shot 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Kara Rawls chipped in a career-high 11 points while Deanna Kuzmanic, the team’s leading scorer, added 10.
UAB (13-11, 6-7) spurted out to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter, thanks to hot shooting from the field. To open the contest, the Blazers shot 8-of-9 (88.9 percent), while the Lady Techsters shot a mere 2-of-10 to start the contest, as UAB had a dominating 20-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
To open the second, UAB used its hot 3-point shooting, 5-of-11 (45.6 percent), to extend its lead to 15 at 34-19 with 4:34 to go in the second.
The Blazers and Lady Techsters traded baskets heading into the midway point, allowing UAB to hold a 19-point lead, its largest of the game, at 41-23.
Louisiana Tech chipped away at the UAB lead in the final half, as it outscored the Blazers 12-9 in the third, but despite their efforts, the Lady Techsters were unable to pull within 13 for the remainder of the contest.
Louisiana Tech (12-11, 7-5) came into the day ranked fourth in the C-USA standings. The Lady Techsters were led by Brandi Wingate, the teams leading scorer, who was the lone player in double figures for LA Tech with 10. Wingate and Jasmine LeBlanc reeled in six boards apiece to lead Louisiana Tech.
UAB outscored LA Tech 26-12 in the paint. The Blazers shot 46.2 percent (24-of-52), and went 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from downtown.
LA Tech shot 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the floor and led UAB in points off turnovers, 11-7, due to the Blazers’ 15 mishaps.
UAB returns to the court next Sunday, February 21, as it hosts C-USA preseason favorite, Middle Tennessee. The Blazers will be looking for revenge after a loss to the Blue Raiders earlier this season. The matchup will be broadcast live on ASN.
