BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's basketball freshman guard Javien Williams was featured on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays on Thursday morning. Williams, who was making his first career start, scored two of his career-high 21 points on an up-and-under layup in a 84-73 win at Stephen F. Austin.
It was the second time this season the UAB men's basketball team has been featured on SportsCenter. Tyler Madison was featured on the hit ESPN show as one of the top defensive plays on November 15 for his block against Furman.
"It was exciting to wake up and see that I made the Sportscenter Top 10, but the most important part of last night was us coming away with a win," Williams said. "We've all been working really hard in practice and I think last night we showed what we are capable of when we play to our abilities."
Williams was key in the hot-shooting Blazers posting a program-record 72.1 field goal percentage in the victory. He shot 6-for-9 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Williams also added five rebounds.
The first-year guard was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., and attended Woodlawn High School. Williams has played in all nine games this season and is now averaging 5.1 points per game.
"We knew what type of player Javien was when we recruited him out of high school," Ehsan said. "He is extremely athletic and has the ability to get to the basket and score. He is going to be a big part of our team and we're excited to have him at UAB."
The Blazers travel to Memphis for their next game on Saturday, December 10. Tip-off against the Tigers is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
