IRVING, Texas – Redshirt freshman Erik Henze of the UAB men’s soccer team was honored on Wednesday by Conference USA with the conference’s Spirit of Service Award. He is one of 14 individuals to be recognized by the league and the only men’s soccer player to earn the distinction.
The award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in the elected sport.
“We are proud of Erik and his incredible record of service,” said UAB head coach Mike Getman. “He is a great representative of our team and our University.”
The last UAB men’s soccer player to receive the award was Hunter Weber in 2014. Henze is the fourth Blazer since 2008 to attain the accolade under Getman.
Henze has made an invaluable mark in the community. The redshirt freshman has completed 168 hours of community service since walking onto the team last year. The Birmingham, Ala., native is majoring in biology and volunteers year-round in his hometown. Henze serves on the SAAC Executive Board and was named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll last season.
