BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team defeated Tuskegee University 88-67 in the Blazers' exhibition opener on Thursday night at Bartow Arena.
UAB shot 47 percent overall (32-of-68), and assisted on 23 of its 32 made baskets. Deanna Kuzmanic led four Blazers in double figures with a game-high 21 points, while freshmen Rachael Childress and Micah Scheetz added 14 and 12, respectively while junior Keonna Farmer chipped in with 10.
"We shot the ball well," head coach Randy Norton said. "We were 47 percent from the field and 42 percent from the three. The thing that sticks out to me, I love to look at the assist column, and we had 23, which means we really shared the basketball. So, for the first time out with this young of a team, I'm very, very pleased."
Trailing 9-4 early in the first quarter, the Blazers used a 11-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game, and led 15-11 at the first media timeout. The run continued out of the break and would ultimately be a 16-2 spurt which helped UAB lead 22-16 after the opening 10 minutes.
The two teams traded baskets early in the second quarter, but a 6-0 spurt for Tuskegee got the Tigerettes with four at 32-28 and forced UAB into a timeout. The Blazers responded to the timeout and finished the half on a 9-0 run, capped by Miyah Barnes' half court heave as time expired to give UAB a 41-28 lead at the break.
UAB scored 12 of the first 15 points to start the third and took a commanding 53-31 lead with 6:43 remaining in the quarter. The Blazers led by 23 points on three separate occasions in the third stanza.
The Blazers' largest lead of 24 points came in the fourth quarter when Farmer connected on a jumper with 6:55 remaining, bringing the score of 75-51.
UAB played all 12 players who were dressed this evening, and 11 of them found the scoring column. The Blazers were 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from downtown as a team.
Tuskegee received a team-high 20 points from Rachel Brownlee, while Taylor Mills had 18 and Jade Wilson 10.
The Blazers return to action on Monday, Nov. 7 at Bartow Arena against Lane College in their final tune up before the regular season. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
