Will Battersby Joins the Green & Gold

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team adds another local product in Will Battersby (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park). The senior left-handed pitcher is going into entering his third year on the Spain Park varsity squad.
“When you begin each year’s recruiting class you hope to recruit the best players in our area,” said head coach Brian Shoop. “We feel blessed to have Thomas Lowery, Carter Pharis, Matt Calvert, Stephen Dobbs, Zakez Jones, Thomas Johns, Tyler Tolbert and Price Visintainer who are all local players in our program. This year we are excited to announce that Will Battersby from Spain Park High School will be joining our baseball family.”
Battersby has been coached by former UAB player Will Smith and was one of the best pitchers in the area last year. Battersby held a 2.12 ERA while striking out 61 batters and picking up six wins. He was selected to the 2016 AHSAA All-Star Team and named to the 2016 All-Over The Mountain Baseball Team.
Battersby is ranked as the sixth-best left-handed pitching prospect in the state of Alabama and ranked 67th among all players in the state.
“Will has been coached by Will Smith (who played at UAB) and Brooks Dunn so he will be ready to complete in Division I Baseball,” said Shoop. “We first saw Will in our summer camp and our Fall League and got to know him as a young man. Already one of the best Pitchers in the Birmingham area, Will has a loose arm and an easy delivery and we believe he will make a big jump in college. He already possesses a college ready change-up. It is exciting to add a 6’3” LHP who projects so well and is from one of the top programs in the Birmingham area."
