IRVING, Texas – UAB women’s basketball freshman Miyah Barnes earned Conference USA’s first Freshman of the Week award of the season following her play at the Maggie Dixon Classic, the league announced Monday.
“Miyah came off the bench and sparked our team this past weekend,” head coach Randy Norton said. “Every day I see her get better and better. I’m very excited for Miyah – she has a ton of potential and we’re just seeing the start of it.”
Barnes, who leads the Blazers and all C-USA freshmen with 14.0 points per contest, has tallied double figures in her first two career games donning the Green and Gold. Her 28 points through her first two games ranks ninth in the NCAA among freshmen.
Against No. 21 DePaul, the Memphis, Tenn., native netted 18 points on 7-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
“I’m very glad and thankful that I received the first Freshman of the Week award from Conference USA,” Barnes said. “I still have to continue to work, learn and grow so I can contribute my best to my teammates.”
In her debut, Barnes chipped in 10 points in UAB’s 59-49 win over Gardner-Webb.
Since she stepped on the court, Barnes has made quite a splash, including making it onto #SCTop10 with the No. 4 play with a buzzer-beater at halftime of the Blazers’ 88-67 exhibition win over Tuskegee.
Barnes is UAB’s first freshman to win the award since Deanna Kuzmanic won the award in December last year.
UAB (1-1) hosts Belmont (1-1) in its home opener on Saturday. Tip between the Blazers and Bruins is set for 2 p.m.
