BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's basketball team continues its three-game homestand Monday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host Furman from Bartow Arena in the second game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
UAB (1-0) opened the 2016-17 season Friday with an 86-66 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff to give new head coach Robert Ehsan his first career win. Tyler Madison led five Blazers in double figures with a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Hakeem Baxter added 15 points and five rebounds while Chris Cokley turned in 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Dirk Williams chipped in with 13 points and hit a career-best seven free throws, and newcomer Javien Williams tallied 11 points and four assists in his debut.
Furman (0-1) dropped a 73-71 decision Friday at Presbyterian despite a game-high 26 points from junior guard Devin Sibley.
The Paladins were tabbed to finish third in the Southern Conference by the media and fifth in polling of the league's 10 head coaches, and Sibley was selected to the preseason All-SoCon team by the coaches.
Furman finished 19-16 overall and 11-7 in the SoCon a year ago and return four starters from a 2016 team that placed third in its league and recorded the school's first postseason victory in 40 years.
"Furman is a very good team and will certainly be in the top half of the Southern Conference," Ehsan said. "They have four starters returning and have a few good freshmen they brought in. This is going to be a good RPI game during our non-conference schedule."
UAB is 18-3 all-time against the Southern Conference but faces Furman for the first time in school history.
UAB will host its own version of Monday Night Football with several members of the Blazer football team available for autographs and pictures at each entrance to Bartow Arena prior to tip-off. In addition, head coach Bill Clark will address fans in both the Green and Gold Room and Champion Club before the game and on the court at halftime.
Three lucky fans will also have an opportunity to win 2017 UAB football season tickets at halftime.
