BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Iris Dunn scored the game-winning goal and WKU moved into first place in Conference USA with a 2-0 victory over the UAB women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon from the WKU Soccer Complex.
Dunn gave the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when she struck for her fourth goal of the season. Erin Jones dribbled down the left side of the field and sent a cross into the UAB box that found Dunn for a header past Blazer keeper Kelsey Daugherty.
Chandler Backes added her team-leading 10th goal of the season minutes before halftime to put WKU ahead 2-0. Bria Mosley picked up an assist on the play after her cross allowed Backes to deliver a shot into the corner of the net.
“We got down early against a good team and gave up another goal late in the first half,” UAB head coach Harold Warren said. “I thought we played much better in the second half and created some scoring chances, but we’ve got to find ways to keep the ball out of the net when we’re on the road. It will be important for us to come home and regroup to get ready to play against two of the better teams in our league this weekend.”
Megan Hudgens put together a scoring chance for UAB in the 79th minute, but WKU keeper Allison Leone stopped the shot on her way to finishing with three saves. Marin Carter and Amy Brewer also had shots on goal for UAB.
UAB returns to the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome North Texas to BBVA Compass Field.
