Blazers Travel to Marshall, WKU for Weekend Tilts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Having gone unbeaten in two of its last three games, the UAB women’s soccer team returns to the road for the first time since Sept. 18 when the Blazers travel to Huntington, W.Va., Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) to face Marshall from Veterans Memorial Soccer Stadium. UAB closes the weekend Sunday at 1 p.m. with a trip to Bowling Green, Ky., to face WKU from the WKU Soccer Complex.
UAB (4-6-1, 1-2-1 C-USA) begins play on Friday coming off a three-match homestand that saw the Blazers allow just one goal en route to picking up four points in the league standings. Sophomore Kelsey Daugherty made 11 saves during the homestand and now ranks fifth in the league with 51 saves.
Offensively, sophomore midfielder Jessica Do leads UAB with nine points on four goals and one assist. Junior Rachel Green stands first on the team and is tied for fourth in the conference with five assists.
Marshall (3-5-3, 1-2-1 C-USA) is unbeaten in its last two games following a tie at Southern Miss and a victory at Louisiana Tech. The Thundering Herd had lost three straight before their draw Sept. 25 in Hattiesburg.
Freshman forward Jordan Sackaris has scored six goals to go along with one assist to pace Marshall with 13 points. Fellow forward Sydney Arnold ranks second on the squad with 11 points on three goals and five assists.
UAB has defeated Marshall in two of the last three years and leads the all-time series 8-3-1. In addition, the Blazers have beaten the Thundering Herd four times in seven chances in games played in Huntington.
WKU (8-4-0, 3-1-0 C-USA) saw its five-game winning streak snapped Sunday when the Hilltoppers dropped a 2-1 decision at North Texas. It was also the first time WKU had allowed a goal since falling 1-0 to LSU on Sept. 8. The Hilltoppers face Middle Tennessee Friday before arriving in Birmingham.
Freshman forward Chandler Backes leads Conference USA with nine goals and enters the weekend second in the league with 19 points. Keeper Allison Leone owns a 0.72 goals against average and has surrendered only one goal during conference play.
