Blazers Face Santa Clara in Midweek Tilt
10/3/2016 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team looks to maintain its recent success at BBVA Compass Field when Santa Clara comes to town on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. UAB is 4-3-3 overall but 4-2-1 at home and undefeated across its last four games in Birmingham. The Broncos enter at 5-3-0 and have won four of their last five contests.
"The recover part is the most difficult for us," said UAB head coach Mike Getman. "Getting our legs back under us in only 48 hours is challenging. This season, we've played well in almost every game. We've gone from one game to the next performing well each time. This past weekend wasn't our best performance but I'm confident the guys will put it behind them."

LAST TIME OUT
The UAB men's soccer team lost to Florida Atlantic in the 105th minute after a grueling game Saturday night. The game went nearly three and a half hours as a weather delay in the 76th minute lasted over an hour.
Opportunities were tough to come by for either team throughout the game. The Owls had a pair of chances within 27 seconds of each other but UAB goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky came up big both times. The senior netminder first stopped a shot in the 31st minute that led to a corner kick and subsequent header for FAU but Kuzminsky once again got behind the shot to keep the clean sheet.
The two teams were even in shots at 11 each until the final overtime period. The only shot of the period proved to be enough for the Owls. David Adejunmobi headed a free kick by Alvaro Campuzano after he charged in from outside the box and placed the ball in the left corner. Kuzminsky's shutout streak came to an end at 397 minutes. He finished the contest with four saves.
1999 FLASHBACK
The only time UAB and Santa Clara have met was in the Elite Eight in 1999. The Blazers pushed the game into overtime despite playing with 10 men due to a red card in the 15th minute. Santa Clara eventually won 3-2 to earn a spot in the Final Four.
SCOUTING SANTA CLARA
Santa Clara is a historically strong program with one national title (1999) to its name and five Final Four appearances. The Broncos have traversed the country so far this year, playing at Wisconsin, Northwestern, SMU, Tulsa, and playing neutral site games in Las Vegas, Nev. The West Coast Conference representative has rattled off four wins in their last five games and is outscoring teams 6-3 during that stretch.
Yoshi Chaffin and Carlos Delgadillo have each scored twice and added an assist this season. The latter was a First Team All-WCC selection last season after leading the league with 10 goals. Delgadillo has totaled 16 goals in his career, four shy of the top 10 in school history.
"Santa Clara is a skillful and hard-working team," said Getman. "They present a number of challenges for us. It's also difficult when you haven't played a team in 15 years. It's hard to know exactly how their going to play and what they are going to do."
