BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team hosted its Scout Day on Friday afternoon. 18 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams attended as the Blazers showcased their talent at Young Memorial Field.
“Today was great,” said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. “There is so many things going on that scheduling is difficult. We’re thrilled and appreciative that so many professional organizations would want to invest a day in the fall evaluating our guys and take the time to do so.”
The Blazers went through a variety of drills throughout the afternoon, beginning with the 60 yard dash and concluding with an intrasquad scrimmage.
UAB has seen four players drafted in the last three years and ten since Shoop started with the Green & Gold in 2007, nearly matching the total in the program history (14) before his arrival.
“Baseball is a funny sport because so many young kids dream of playing professionally baseball,” said Shoop. “It’s more of a possibility with the 40 rounds in the MLB compared to two rounds in the NBA and seven in the NFL. It’s a big day for our kids. They handled themselves well and showed good. I’m proud of them. We got a lot of positive feedback so there are some guys on their lists that they will be back to see in the spring."
