Nixon and Zembyla Named UAB Athletes of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Wide receiver John Nixon of the football team and Erika Zembyla of the volleyball team have earned UAB Athletes of the Week.
Nixon assisted the Green team’s offense during the second Green and Gold game last Thursday at BBVA Compass Field with a standout performance.
The Gainesville, Fla., native had six catches for 127 yards and a touchdown grab in Green’s 36-21 victory over Gold. He led all players in both catches and receiving yards.
Zembyla recorded a team-high .452 attack percentage against Middle Tennessee Sunday at Alumni Memorial Gym in Murfreesboro, Tenn., as UAB defeated the Blue Raiders 3-1.
The Cyprus native tied with Middle Tennessee’s Regan Coughlin for a match-high 15 kills and only committed one error. She was second on the team with 11 digs and recorded two blocks in the match.
This is Zembyla’s second time this season earning UAB Athlete of the Week honors.
The UAB football team will continue its remaining Fall practice schedule. The volleyball team hosts UTSA Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and Western Kentucky Sunday, Oct. 30 at 12 p.m.
