Komati and Ragon Named UAB Athletes of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Eric Komati’s title winning performance and Catherine Ragon’s two wins to reach the semifinals have earned the pair of tennis players UAB Athletes of the Week.
After three wins on Sunday, Komati earned the consolation singles bracket title at the 2016 ITA Southern Regional Competition at Auburn’s Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The senior co-captain won two matches on Saturday to reach the fourth round. He defeated Mississippi State’s Vaughn Hunter during the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 match, Louisiana’s Vlad Kramarov in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-4 and Tulane’s Luis Erlenbusch, 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation finals to earn his third win of the day and the consolation title.
With his three consecutive wins, Komati improved to 11-2 in singles action this fall including his total of six wins at the ITA Southern Regional.
Ragon won two matches and reached the semifinals of her singles draw at the ITA Southern Regional Championships at the University of Alabama.
Ragon began with a victory over Northwestern State’s Vladislava Litvinova with a 6-0, 7-5 match, and defeated Ole Miss’ Cameron Kriscunas , 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before falling to Lousiana-Monroe’s Ioana Popescu in the semifinals. The senior finished strongly despite the upset.
Women’s tennis is back in action for its final match of the fall during the Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the University of Alabama on Oct. 28-30. Men’s tennis will participate in the Birmingham Country Club Collegiate on November 4.
