BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UTSA scored one goal in each half and held off a late UAB rally on its way to posting a 2-1 victory Sunday from BBVA Compass Field.
UTSA (7-9-0, 3-4-0 C-USA) grabbed an early lead in the 20th minute when Brianna Livecchi struck for her fifth goal of the season. After a corner kick was awarded to the Roadrunners, Channing Machen sent a cross into the UAB box that found its way to the feet of Jordyn Lacy. Lacy then delivered a pass to her left to set up Livecchi for a shot into the far corner of the net.
The Roadrunners capitalized on a slick playing surface with a goal midway through the second half to build a two-goal advantage. Following a cross from the left side of the field by Melissa Finley, UAB keeper Kelsey Daugherty left her post to make an attempt to catch the ball in the air. However, the wet ball caused from rain earlier in the game prevented Daugherty from a clean catch, allowing Camrynne Hoover to shoot the loose ball rebound into the open goal.
UAB (4-10-1, 1-6-1 C-USA) cut the lead in half in the 83rd minute on a goal from Megan Hudgens. Amy Brewer dribbled down the middle of the field and hit Hudgens in stride for a shot that beat UTSA keeper Isabella Sanchez to the far post. Hudgens is now tied with Jessica Do for the team lead with nine points after collecting her third goal of the year.
Daugherty finished with four saves and stands second in Conference USA with 74.
UAB returns to the action Friday at 3 p.m. when the Blazers travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss.
