Blazer Basketball Celebrates Hoops on the Green

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB basketball programs kicked off the 2016-17 season in style on Thursday with Hoops on the Green in front of an estimated crowd of 4,200.
The preseason event featured player introductions, highlight videos, skills competitions, dancing and a fireworks show.
Women’s basketball freshman Rachael Childress won the three-point contest after sinking nine treys to beat men’s junior Nick Norton. Childress defeated teammates Deanna Kuzmanic and Whytney Singleton to reach the finals, while Norton bested Nate Darling and Deion Lavender in the opening round.
Dirk Williams stole the show in the dunk contest after he leapt over seven-footer Thomas Smallwood for a one-handed slam.
Both the men’s and women’s teams kickoff the 2016-17 season Thursday, Nov. 3rd with a doubleheader from Bartow Arena beginning at 5 p.m.
