BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Henrique Sposito's multi-goal game on the soccer field and Erika Zembyla's career-high kills on the volleyball court have earned them UAB Athletes of the Week.
Leading the Blazers to victory, Sposito scored both goals that led the Blazers to a 2-1 victory against No. 15 Kentucky on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field.
The senior midfielder secured the first goal during the ninth minute when a UK defender deflected the ball on the way to the net. In the 20th minute, fellow Blazer Phillip Makinde led the ball towards the net where Sposito was in wait to tally the game-winner.
The UAB men's soccer team is currently 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in Conference USA, ranking the Blazers second in the league.
Recording a career-high 19 kills, Zembyla helped lead UAB to a 3-1 victory over Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena. She recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 kills and 12 digs. Zembyla currently posts a .281 attack percentage in C-USA play.
Sposito and the men's soccer team are back in action this week in Nashville, Tenn., as they face Lipscomb on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m., followed by a critical C-USA match at South Carolina on Saturday evening. Zembyla and the volleyball team have two conference road matches this weekend. The Blazers will face Western Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. and Rice on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.
