Conference USA Release
IRVING, Texas – Mathieu Laurent and Henrique Sposito were each honored by Conference USA today, as the UAB duo was tabbed as the C-USA Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively. It was the first time a UAB men’s soccer player earned either award this season.
UAB won two important home matches this past week. The Blazers first topped Santa Clara 1-0 on Tuesday before defeating No. 15 Kentucky 2-1 on Saturday to improve to 6-3-3 this season and 2-1-1 in conference. In addition, the seven points UAB has accumulated is good for second in C-USA.
Laurent was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career. The sophomore did not miss a single minute across the two victories, adding an assist on the game-winner against Santa Clara. He anchored the back line from his center back position as the Blazers allowed only two shots on goal over the week, and the only goal conceded was an own goal off a deflection.
Sposito scored twice in the win over the Wildcats en route to C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors. Both goals came within the first 20 minutes as the Blazers pushed the tempo early. The senior’s first career brace doubled his career scoring output. Sposito is now tied for the team lead in goals (3) and points (7) this season and leads the squad with two game-winning goals.
