UAB Continues Homestand, Faces Charlotte Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s basketball squad continues its homestand as it welcomes Charlotte to Bartow Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tip between the Blazers and 49ers is set to begin at 2 p.m. Prior to the tip, senior guard Chelsee Black will be honored, as she surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her career this season.

UAB (8-7, 1-2) has remained perfect at Bartow Arena for over the past year, as it holds a 13-regular season home win streak dating back to its 62-49 win over Southern Miss in the 2014-15 season. This season, the Blazers are a flawless 6-0 on their home court, outscoring their opponents by 22.2 points per game.
In its latest outing, UAB picked up its first conference win Thursday as it took down Old Dominion (6-10, 2-2), 58-55. Freshman guard Deanna Kuzmanic, who ranks sixth amongst all NCAA freshmen in treys per game, led the attack, pouring in 17 points. She was 7-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from downtown.
Black, the Blazers’ leading scorer, added 14 points, including a game-winning three with 15.2 seconds to play. Senior forward Brittany Winborne chipped in eight points, while reeling in six boards and dishing out a game-best four assists.
The UAB defense has been on lock this year, holding its opponetns to just 55.6 points per contest, the best mark in Conference USA and the 37th-best in the nation. On the glass, the Blazers are out-rebounding their opponents by a +7.2 margin, the 26th-best in the nation. Winborne’s dominant performance on the glass has her reeling in 9.5 boards per game, the second most in the conference. The senior forward is also shooting 57 percent from the floor, behind just the 49ers’ Alexis Alexander.
Charlotte (9-6, 2-2) is looking to bounce back after falling to Middle Tennesee 72-67 on Thursday. The 49ers were led by senior Alexander, who paced the squad with her third double-double of the season, with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
The Blazers claimed the last meeting with the 49ers, 60-52, on January 22, 2015. Black paced UAB with 12 points, shooting 3-of-7 from the floor, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Winborne protected the glass, reeling in 10 boards, nine defensive, in the win. Winborne went 5-of-5 from the floor, chipping in 10 points.
