TOLEDO, Ohio - The UAB men's golf team turned in its lowest score of the year in round two of the Inverness Intercollegiate on Monday, to place sixth of 15 teams entering Tuesday's final round at the Inverness Club.
"Everyone played really well this afternoon," head coach Alan Murray said. "They were all around par. It's just a really tough golf course. We started on tough holes and finished on tough holes. We got off to a slow start this morning but the boys played really well this afternoon and gave ourselves somewhat of a chance."
The Blazers fired a team score 305 in the opening round, but stormed back in the final 18 holes of the day to shoot a 7-over and get within striking distance of the top five.
Freshman Tim Harry and sophomore Lee Hodges led the way for the Green and Gold, both finishing 6-over, 148 for the day in a tie for 14th. Hodges turned in a 2-over, 73 in his opening round, before dropping a 75 to close the day just four strokes within the top three.
Harry, who is competing as part of the lineup for the first time in his career, played well for the Blazers, mirroring Hodges' scores with a 75 and 73.
"Tim Harry shot 2-over and played solid all day as a freshman," Murray said. "I'm really impressed with his performance and proud of him."
Sophomore Taylor Eyster carded a 6-over, 77, in his first round, but fought back for a 2-over, 73 to close the day at 8-over, 150, tied for 24th.
Seniors Martin Rohwer and Will Cannon both finished the day at 12-over, 154.
California led the way as a team, turning in a 291 and 293 to sit at 16-over, 584 for the tournament. Defending champion East Tennessee State finished two strokes behind the Bears in Monday's action. Cal's KK Limbhasut carded 70s in both of his rounds to lead the way individually by two strokes.
"If we can go out and start and finish a little better than today, and play the way we did today in the middle, we could have a chance to see if we can get into the argument to determine who's going to win this," Murray said. "Overall I think it was a good day. The boys will learn a lot from playing a golf course like this; it's so challenging and you can't rest for a minute."
