BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - South Carolina broke through in a defensive battle early in the second half to defeat the UAB men's soccer team, 1-0, Friday night at West Campus Field in the Conference USA opener.
"Our goalkeeper didn't make a save and we lost," head coach Mike Getman said. "That's frustrating, there's no question. I thought South Carolina outworked us from start to finish and I thought we struggled to play the way we want to play. I didn't think we played well or hard, and in Conference USA if you don't come with your best performance every single day, you're going to lose."
On the offensive side, UAB (3-4-0, 0-1 C-USA) had its chances, getting off 11 shots for six on goal. The Gamecocks' keeper William Pyle defended well, keeping away six Blazer shots on goal. South Carolina took six shots for just the one on target.
The lone score came 10 minutes into the second half when Asa Kryst snuck one past UAB keeper Joe Kuzminsky.
The Blazers' most notable chance came in the 77th minute when Rami Dajani broke away from a defender and made a nice touch on a ball that deflected off the post.
Freddy Ruiz's five shots for three on goal led the way for the Blazers. Lars Willemse finished with two shots, both of which were on target.
UAB returns home Monday night to close the four-game home stand versus No. 5 Coastal Carolina. Monday's match is being tabbed as "Monday Night Futbol," and also International Night. UAB has partnered with the International House to celebrate all of UAB's international students and student-athletes. The first 250 fans will receive a free Monday Night Futbol t-shirt.
