UAB Drops Saturday Matches to Austin Peay and Gardner-Webb

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Junior Gabby Deshotel recorded her fourth double-double of the season, but the UAB volleyball team (4-7) could not overcome Austin Peay and Gardner-Webb in the final matches of the Scenic City Showdown.
Deshotel led the Blazers offense with a total of 43 kills for a .194 clip over the two matches. The outside hitter recorded her fourth double-double of the season over Austin Peay with a career-high 26 kills and 14 digs.
Junior setter Amber Treace also recorded her second double-double of the season by tallying 50 assists and 16 digs against the Governors.
Freshman Jillian Tinglin recorded a team-best .263 attack percentage on Saturday. Tinglin recorded 13 kills on 38 swings for a .263 percentage.
Junior libero Emma Schroer led the UAB defense with 48 digs over the two matches for a 6.86 digs per set average.
Match One -- Austin Peay (L, 3-0)
UAB pushed Austin Peay (4-6) to the brink, but the Governors completed a three-set sweep over the Blazers to win Saturday's opener at the Scenic City Showdown.
The Governors jumped to an early lead to win the first set, 25-15. UAB battled back in sets two and three for close decisions, but Austin Peay came out on top in both sets (25-22, 28-26).
Deshotel led the UAB offense with 17 kills in the match with a .200 attack percentage. Redshirt freshman Zahria Ri'chard added seven kills for the Blazers' attack for a .385 clip. Ri'chard added one block assists for the UAB defense.
Treace set up the UAB offense with 22 assists. Treace added four digs, one service ace and one kill for the Blazers.
Schroer posted a team-leading 16 digs for the Blazers.
Austin Peay was led by Samantha Strother, who tallied 12 kills for a .161 hitting percentage. Strother recorded a double-double for the Governors by garnering 14 digs in the match.
Match Two -- Gardner-Webb (L, 3-1)
After dropping the first set, 25-20, to Gardner-Webb (4-7) the Blazers battled from behind to take set two (25-20) before dropping two close sets to the Runnin' Bulldogs (25-23, 27-25) to allow Gardner-Webb to secure the 3-1 victory.
Deshotel recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 26 kills and 14 digs in the match. Tinglin added 13 kills to the UAB offense. Setter Treace garnered 50 assists and 16 digs to record her second double-double of the year.
Redshirt freshman Victoria Young recorded a team-high seven blocks for the Green and Gold defense while Schroer added 32 digs on the defense side of the net.
Devin Judge led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 12 kills for a .095 clip.
The Blazers return to action on Wednesday as UAB faces C-USA foe Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Match time is set for 6 p.m. CT
