BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team (1-4-0) displayed strong defense despite rainy conditions, but Louisville's (3-2-1) second half goal gave the Cardinals a 1-0 victory Friday night at West Campus Field.
"We came out and did what we needed to do tactically," said head coach Harold Warren. "It was just one moment that we didn't step, and they punished us. We came out with a lot of energy once we started up again. The ball was bouncing around the box, but we just couldn't get it done. The young team is learning. We're close. The tactics we used today worked except for one moment."
The two programs were locked in a defense battle from the start. The Cardinals tallied 12 shots in the first half, but the UAB defense held strong to keep Louisville off the board.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty recorded her best performance of the year with 10 saves for the Blazers.
"She's a freshman, but she is just that good," said Warren.
Louisville struck in the 62nd minute with a goal from Aubrey Baker off an assist from Hannah Konermann. Moments later, weather struck West Campus Field and delayed the game for over 90 minutes.
"We came out with a plan to go after them," said Warren. "We just didn't get it done there. Louisville is a good team that plays in a strong conference, so kudos to them. They did what they were supposed to do. They had to run a play. We did what we were supposed to do, but we just couldn't get that equalizer late in the game."
The Green and Gold recorded two shots in the final minutes, but could not find the net.
The Blazers will return to action on Sunday when UAB travels to Mercer. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
