AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB women's soccer team could not overcome early mistakes as the Blazers (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season in a 4-0 contest to No. 16 Auburn Friday evening at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
"It was a tough match, but it allowed us to gain experience," said head coach Harold Warren. "Auburn imposed their will on us early. We bounced back in the second. We played better, but it was too little too late."
The Tigers took advantage of two UAB fouls that allowed Auburn (3-0) to score two goals off of penalty kick opportunities.
"We made some mistakes with the two penalty kicks," Warren said. "We are going to continue gaining on the learning curve with such a young group. The team fought hard and will prepared for Sunday's match."
The Green and Gold took four shots on the evening, but could not find the net as Auburn's Sarah Le Beau and Alyse Scott combined for the shutout.
Freshman Kelsey Daugherty made her second start in net for the Blazers, making one save. Daugherty moves to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Caroline Kehrer led the Blazer offense taking two shots with freshman Jessica Do and senior Paige Hanks accounting for one shot each.
UAB and Auburn were locked in a scoreless battle until the 29th minute when Auburn's Brook Ramiser scored the Tigers first penalty kick goal. Auburn would add a second goal of the half with Casie Ramiser's netter.
The Tigers would score two additional goals in the second half, one from a second penalty kick opportunity in the final seconds, to take the 4-0 win.
The Blazer freshman contingent continued to make early impacts on the season with five true freshmen in the starting lineup.
"Games like tonight help the players mature," Warren said. "It's not every day you play a top-16 team. The experience is great for them. They will have to learn from this fast and move forward. Our focus is now set on Memphis."
The Blazers will host Memphis in UAB's home opener on Sunday, August 30 at West Campus Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
